30,000 Words Celebration-Excerpt

Hello all! Britton and I have decided that for every 10,000 words we write we will post an excerpt on the blog for you to give feedback on. We are hoping that this might push us to write even more, and help us get more feedback.
So today we reached 30,000 words. Yay! So here is the excerpt. It is the part that takes place right after an excerpt that we posted a while ago (the one with the dragon). If you want to read that post again before you read this one, it was posted on January 5, and doesn't have a title on the post. Well anyway, we hope that you enjoy this!

Miram was frozen with fear. He couldn’t think straight. Now he knew what Gerard had meant about forgetting his spells in fear. The dragon turned its head. Miram could see its nostrils flaring.
“He must’ve smelled me, he’s sure to see me at any moment.” Miram thought.
Miram forgot his fears as he started to think of a plan. Quickly and silently, he moved to the trunk of the nearest tree and started climbing. Now he was grateful that he was required to climb a tree in the obstacle course.
Every time that his feet or hands cracked a small branch, Miram’s heart stopped. Now the dragon was pacing in circles sniffing the air around him. Miram kept on climbing. He guessed that the higher he climbed, the more that his scent would be mixed with the pine and sap of the tree. He reached a vantage point where he could hide his body and still see the dragon on the forest floor below him.
Miram made one wrong move. He accidentally snapped the branch he was holding onto, and the dragon turned and looked at him. His dark glare made Miram realize what was happening. He tried to climb higher up the tree, but he felt the dragon’s claws strike his leather suit.
Then Miram was falling.
He thudded onto the forest floor, dazed. He had a throbbing pain in his legs where he had landed. Miram tried to crawl into the brush, but he felt a searing heat wash over his back. Now the dragon was breathing fire at Miram. Miram kept on crawling. The dragon swung its tail around him and the sharp spikes grazed Miram’s back. He felt an icy stinging sensation as the spikes hit him. Then, he felt his hot blood trickling down his side from the wound.
Miram knew it was soon to be all over. He looked up at the dragon. The dragon raised its tail, ready to deliver the killing strike.
Then Miram heard a sharp twang come from the trees past the dragon. The dragon’s tail dropped and its head quickly turned to find the source of the sound. Right at that moment, an arrow flew from the trees and buried itself in the dragon’s neck.
The dragon was furious. Miram saw a bluish blood seeping from where the arrow had pierced the dragon. The dragon crawled towards his attacker in the trees.
Miram heard the twang again and another arrow found its mark. This time on the dragon’s shoulder.
The dragon screamed in agony. Then it ran off into the forest.

Miram looked into the trees where the arrows had came from. He saw the same figure that he had been chasing dash off into the woods.

Gerard

This is a little character profile from the novel my cousin and I are working on:

Gerard is a strong, clever wizard who specializes in defensive magic. He is tall and well-built and has quite a knack with swords. Gerard has brown hair and is serious, (but funny when appropriate) he is one of the best wizards in the world (maybe even the best.)

Hope you like it! Comment if you want us to post more character profiles and excerpts from our book. Remember to vote on the poll to the right and spread the word about the book and blog.

Thanks,
Britton and Anna

Another Excerpt

Hello! Here is another excerpt from the story that Britton and I are writing. FYI: It does not continue from the last post that we posted. (if you would like the continuation from the last excerpt, comment on this post requesting it) Well, we'd appreciate it if you all would comment your feedback.

Also, comment some names for the character name contest. You can comment the names on this post, or any other previous posts.

Here's the excerpt:

“I am going to cast a protection spell on you, so that we can do a quick duel without getting hurt.” Gerard said.
“Duel? Already? You’ve hardly taught me anything.” Miram exclaimed
“Well the best way to learn is to just try it out. Same with the spells I have taught you.”
“Oh, well…” Miram said nervously. “I guess we could try.”
Gerard did the protection spell and they proceeded to the duel.
“Go.” Gerard shouted.
Miram started rushed after Gerard and quickly did a defensive move as Gerard started to hammer Miram with his sharp sword. Miram thought fast and dodged the blow and moved into the stance that Gerard had showed him.
Miram blocked the next jab Gerard sent his way and counter attacked by jabbing back. Luckily, one of his jabs hit Gerard, but only slightly in the thigh. Gerard quickly reacted to the attack and slashed Mirams forehead, leaving a river of blood streaming down his nose and dripping off onto the ground. Miram slashed back, missing Gerard. Then he changed back to the defensive stance quickly. Gerard threw a jab that  nearly hit Miram.  Miram took the opportunity to slash back, but the attack was dodged in a fast jumping motion by Gerard. During the motion, Gerard slashed Miram waist, leaving him crippled. Gerard removed the protection spell and Mirams wounds healed.

The duel was over.
